The Device Inventory provides an overview of device statistics, such as the number of source records per source that fed the Device Inventory, how those records became joined and possibly filtered through the daily Panaseer ETL workflow, and the number of unique Devices presenting in inventory.
This view builds confidence and trust in the Panaseer data pipeline by providing insights into how raw records from source systems are transformed into the data presented in Panaseer. Creating metrics and controls checks from this cleaner, more accurate data empowers you to analyze device count by key business and technical attributes such as device criticality, business unit, device type and operating system.
The Device Inventory view can be accessed from the Panaseer Homepage or left-hand menu as described in Panaseer Inventory overview.
Devices found in security tools
The first metric on the Device Inventory view indicates the number of device-based records ingested that day from all security tools/controls integrated to ingest into Panaseer.
Clicking on this metric displays the counts ingested that day for each control tool.
You can view the raw records ingested from this source by choosing 'View table' for any source. This information helps you understand and reconcile the raw data values versus the cleansed results that appear following the Panaseer ETL process.
You can easily switch between sources and raw data using the dropdown menu.
Panaseer Data Pipeline
The Panaseer Data Pipeline metric and view helps you understand how the raw records have been transformed into the final, unique inventory count.
The view takes you through five key ETL steps and explains their effect on the raw record data. It helps you build confidence as to why the Panaseer total unique device count may differ from the numbers you may be more familiar with from a specific underlying data source.
| Step | Description |
| Step 1 | This number matches the total count of raw device records in all security tools. |
|
Step 2 |
In the Merge Duplicates stage, the Panaseer Entity Resolution process merges duplicate Device records. The output shows the number of Devices after this merging process. |
|
Step 3 |
Business logic is applied to the Device data. Typically, there is no reduction in the Device count after this step. |
|
Step 4 |
Devices that are considered inactive are filtered from the data. Usually, these would be Devices not seen actively on the network in any source within a defined number of days - 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days as examples. These Devices will usually not be included in any metrics within Panaseer. |
|
Step 5 |
Total unique active Devices in Panaseer is the final count of active Devices considered for metrics and Control Checks. It represents the number of individual and active Devices within the Panaseer platform. |
Unique active Devices
Click the Total unique active devices in Panaseer metric to view the number of devices broken down by key business and technical attributes such as device criticality, business unit, device type and operating system.
These attributes will again help to build confidence that the number of Devices represented is accurate, as you should recognize similar totals through your knowledge of the organization's business and infrastructure.
